Bhubaneswar, Sept. 2: Several aspiring candidates filed their nominations in different colleges for the students’ union elections that are scheduled to take place on September 8.
Following the final scrutiny according to the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Commission, the list of the names of valid nominees would be published tomorrow.
The nomination-filing process took place in BJB College, Maharshi College, Capital Law College, Basic Science College, Ekamra College, City Women’s College, Debrai College. Jaydeb College, Kamala Nehru College, Rajdhani College and Ramadevi College.
These places sported a crowded look with students turning out in huge numbers to support their candidates.
Amid cheers and slogans, respective candidates walked in groups to the nomination counters to file their candidature. Outside the campus, the student wings of political parties organised “help camps” to “guide” the students. “We had organised a help camp to guide students on how to file the nominations properly. Most of the time, students get confused and make mistakes. We also briefed the students on the Lyngdoh Commission recommendations,” said BJD student wing chief Rajkamal Jena. Confusions on the affiliation of candidates continued till late in the evening.
“We are not very clear about some of the candidates. It will be clearer only after the publication of the list tomorrow. Some students claim to be of both the parties at a time,” Jena said.
“The list will only be available tomorrow. Students, out of fear, sometimes do not reveal the name of the affiliating party.
“However our current list has Gulshan Rituraj Khiro for president and Sunil Barik for secretary from Basic Science, Maheswar Mandata for president and Mukunda Goel for general secretary from Maharshi College, Sasrita Das as president and Annapurna Digal as secretary for Ramadevi College, Sarmistha Pradhan as president and Tulasi Panda as secretary at the City Women’s College,” he said.
While most students appeared confident, some candidates remained apprehensive of their nominations getting rejected for not being able to meet the 75 per cent attendance norm. “I am not sure if I have the required attendance. I hope I get through,” said presidential candidate Suryakant Nayak of Ekamra College.
“Yesterday being a holiday for Janmastami, we completed almost 30 per cent of home campaigning. However, a lot more needs to be done and we want to visit everyone twice, if possible, by September 7,” said Mahaesh Prasad, a BJB college candidate.
