Bhubaneswar, Nov. 20: Vice-chancellors of state universities have suggested introduction of radio frequency identification technology (RFID), a sophisticated security system, as a part of the library automation project in colleges.

In a report submitted to chancellor S.C. Jamir for improvement of state varsities, the vice-chancellors have said that RFID, considered to be the latest software in library automation system, will ensure that no book is stolen.

There will also be a digital library assistant to help locate books, the report stated.

The higher education department has decided to go for library automation in 50 autonomous colleges of the state. Principals of these colleges have been asked to furnish details about the present condition of their libraries and what they require.

“The first phase of work will begin in February and subsequently all other colleges will be covered,” a senior official of the department said. He said Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for the purpose.

A free library automation software, e-granthalaya, will be used for the purpose.

“By installing the e-granthalaya software, the libraries will be able to connect to a national network. This will help the colleges come closer to an online information hub. Students can access study materials at the click of a mouse. This apart, the automation software will ease cataloguing of the books and journals saving lot of time and manpower,” the official said.

He said that Rs 7-10 lakh would be spent on each college for the project.
