Cuttack: The civic body has decided to come up with a clock tower at the foot of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Setu here with Odia digits on the dial.

The clock will also chime on the hour, officials said.

Municipal commissioner Bikash Ranjan Mohapatra on Thursday said the tower had been planned as part of the beautification projects to make it one of the popular attractions in the city. "The 70-ft-high square-shaped tower would have four clocks on four sides, with each one being five to six feet wide," Mohapatra said.

Officials said the civil works, including the main building, yard work, aluminium ladders and state-of-the-art electrical installations had been estimated to cost around Rs 30 lakh. The cost of the clocks with bell was yet to be worked out.

"If everything goes according to plan, the clock tower will be ready by end of March 2019," Mohapatra said, adding that some of the clock towers in the country were under study to finalise the model for the proposed tower in the city.

The clock tower has been planned at the entrance point to the city.

In another development, the bridge over the Kathajodi river is set to have solar-powered street lighting.

On July 19, chief minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the bridge that serves as a new link for Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. But, the 2.81km bridge has since remained bereft of street lights.

"Over 40 per cent of the work has been completed. We expect the street lights on the bridge to be ready by the end of September," an official of the (R&B) Cuttack division said.

G-ON Energy Cables, a Bhubaneswar company, was given the contract in April to complete the street lighting on the bridge for Rs 3.17 crore.

According to the contract, the private party is expected to come up with solar hybrid auxiliary LED street lighting system with light posts designed to be conducive for fixing CCTV cameras in the future.
