Berhampur, Nov. 11: A special sanitation programme will be launched within a week in the Phalin-ravaged city.

“Sanitation in the city is our next challenge, and we are planning to do it in a phased manner,” said city health officer Subhakanta Das.

Roads remained littered with broken and uprooted trees and other garbage after Phailin had left a trail of destruction in the city on October 12 night. “We had cleared the debris and garbage on a war footing. But, many residents and institutions are again dumping their wastes on the roads. Besides, the roads got littered with garbage during Diwali celebrations,” he said.

The Berhampur Municipal Corporation had engaged 21 tractors to clear the garbage during the post-Phailin period. Besides, 850 sweepers were also pressed into service, he said.

Desiltation of drains proves to be another major challenge, which is in the process, said a civic body official.

Broken walls of City Hospital, Sashi Bhusan Rath Womens College, V.V. Giri Secondary Training School for Women at Giri Road and other institutions are still dumped on roads. “It would be an extra burden for us to clear it,” he said.

Kamapalli resident Dinabandhu Das, who runs a grocery shop in the area, said many trees were still lying roadside and should be removed immediately. “Roads in the city must be cleaned properly in an organised way,” he said.
