Janpath, Kharavela Nagar
This arterial road has a number of malls and commercial establishments. The civic body has installed six large waste bins just beside this 5-km-long stretch, disrupting traffic flow and making commuters vulnerable to accidents. “I saw a biker crash into a waste bin placed just beside the road near Kharavela Nagar,” said Pratap Sahu, a shopkeeper at Shirya Square
Sishu Bhavan Square
Bapuji Nagar, located nearby, is considered the biggest electronics market in the city and sees heavy footfall. Here, the civic body has placed some large bins, which are impeding traffic. “The waste bins are too large and difficult to move. Besides, these are placed right in the middle of on-street parking space,” said Jiten Mohanty, a shop owner at Bapuji Nagar
Acharya Vihar near Apollo Hospital
This area is crowded because of the hospital. Large waste bins installed here obstruct the movement of ambulances and other vehicles. “This stretch has no speed-breakers and vehicles move very fast here, especially at night. The installation of the waste bins has put the commuters at risk,” said Bhagbat Dash, a resident of Acharya Vihar
Jayadev Vihar towards Ekamra Kanan
Installation of waste bins has narrowed the road. Additionally, the garbage-carrying vehicles, which empties waste from the bins, continue to change location once in a while. “The vehicles empty the bins and change their location every now and then. The problems double as the road gets narrower with construction materials for drain and road work dumped on it,” said Biswas Mishra, a resident of Jayadev Vihar
Official Speak
The bins have been installed to keep the city clean. If they are posing road risk, we will mark their positions to inform the commuters. We will also direct our sanitation agencies to ensure that the bins are kept at one position. Ananta Narayan Jena, mayor, Bhubaneswar
