Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21: Khandagiri police today arrested five persons in connection with a clash between residents of Jadupur and Sarakantara last night at Jadupur on the city outskirts.
Two platoons of police personnel were deployed. Eight persons were hurt during the clash. “It was a fight among some drunk youths,” said Sk Hussein of Jadupur.
Sources said that while two youths from Sarakantara area were having their food in Jadupur market around 8pm, a drunken local youth shouted at them. Soon these two youths, who were also drunk, started arguing with him which turned into a scuffle.
The five accused were sent to Jharapada special jail today after a local court rejected their bail pleas. The police did not disclose names of the accused.
Sources said the police facilitated a talk between the senior members from both the sides and decided to resolve the matter. “They formed a peace committee consisting of 10 senior members with five from each side. It would sit every 15 days to settle the disputes among them,” said Jagannath Pradhan, assistant commissioner of police of sub-division III of the Bhubaneswar Urban Police Department.
As the fight between them spread, people from both the sides gathered there sparking a clash.
“Though the residents decided to settle the matter following discussions among themselves, we had to arrest these people as they had breached peace of the area and caused injuries to people,” said a senior police officer of Khandagiri police station.
