Sambalpur, Oct. 30: The municipal administration has decided to remove unnecessary humps on the Ring Road here.
“The speed breakers will be removed from the Ring Road on November 10,” said executive officer of the Sambalpur Municipality Anirudhha Padhan. But, he has made it clear that the humps near educational institutions along the Ring Road will not the removed.
A group of senior citizens had met the municipal authority last week and apprised them of the problems caused by unnecessary humps on the Ring Road.
The Ring Road, which runs along the Mahanadi river in Sambalpur, was constructed to protect the city from flood and provide an alternative route to motorists.
Since traffic movement is comparatively lower on the Ring Road than other streets in the city, many commuters coming to Sambalpur prefer the stretch as it reduces time and distance.
However, there are nearly 50 speed breakers on the 7-km stretch between the National Highway-6 to Kacherichhak.
“Speed breakers are essential to control a vehicle’s speed. But too many of them cause irritation and commuters have a harrowing experience. It is really a good decision that the concerned authority will remove the unnecessary humps from the ring road,” said local resident Biswajit Pattnaik.
A commuter, Kishoe Dehury, said: “I avoid travelling on Ring Road because of the speed breakers. I am happy to know that the authority has finally decided to remove the unwanted humps from the road.”
“A drive on the Ring Road along the Mahanadi is a beautiful experience. Once the humps are removed, no doubt it will become more pleasant,” said Dehury.
