Cuttack, April 28: Police today arrested Lubun Sen, 40, a popular Odia music album director, dancer and choreographer for allegedly blackmailing and threatening a 23-year-old girl.
Lubun's arrest took place after the victim lodged a complaint with the CDA-Phase II police station last night.
Lubun and his brother Tubun are considered the top choreographers in the Odia entertainment industry. They have delivered several hit albums and numbers.
The accused had befriended the victim, a student and aspiring model, at an event in Bhubaneswar in 2013. The girl is from Deogarh and is studying at a homeopathic college in Bhubaneswar.
Promising to give her a break in the industry, Lubun was allegedly in touch with her and had taken many photographs of her.
Their friendship became sour after the girl refused to keep in touch when her marriage was fixed with someone else.
The police said Lubun had allegedly put pressure on the girl to meet him and had threatened to show their photographs together to her would-be husband.
"According to the complaint by the victim's father, Lubun had threatened her daughter to post the pictures with the girl on various social networking sites and sent them to her would-be in-laws," said Anusuya Nayak, inspector in-charge of CDA Phase-II police station.
Nayak said the accused, who is a resident of CDA sector-11, had also threatened the victim with dire consequences and had demanded Rs 5 lakh from her in exchange of the photographs.
Based on the complaint, Lubun has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
"We have arrested Lubun Sen on the basis of prima facie evidence," said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora.
A laptop, a camcorder, two mobile phones, a memory card and seven video cassettes have been seized from the accused. Senior officials said that the content of the memory card, laptop and other articles seized would be thoroughly examined.
Members of the Odia entertainment industry have demanded a detailed probe into the allegations.
"I was shocked to hear of Lubun's arrest," said Bobby Islam, a choreographer.
