Sambalpur, Aug. 11: Clogged drains and heavy downpour has created a flood-like situation in several areas here with the drain water flowing onto the roads.

“Drain water entered Nayapara Girls Hindi M.E. School and Nayapara Girls Upper Primary School, forcing students and staff to take shelter in our school. This is not the first time such an incident has happened in this locality. We had complained about the matter to the municipal authorities several times,” said Rajkumar Sandilya, a teacher in Government Hindi High School.

“The authorities should remove silt from the drains. The choked drains always create a flood-like situation in the city,” he said.

“The drain water entered my shop. The civic authorities are not at all serious about removing the silt from the drains. The garbage of the city is also being dumped into the drains resulting into choking of the drains,” said a shopkeeper.

“The drain water was flowing on the road, which connects Golebazar with Baidyanath Chhak in the city. These things indicate that the civic authorities are not at all prepared to face the monsoon,” he said. “The drain water was flowing on the road at Laxmi Talkies Chowk and in front of the Reserve Line, too. Had the civic authorities removed the silt from the drains, the situation would have been different. Two hour of rain plays havoc in Sambalpur. The civic authorities should have prepared themselves before the onset of monsoon,” said Purusottam Thela, a local resident.

Sambalpur municipality chairperson, Reena Trivedi said: “The roads and building division of the works department is carrying out construction of drains. For this reason, the residents are facing problems.”

“I have asked the municipal engineer and health officer to visit the affected areas. We had even requested the revenue divisional commissioner of northern division to take the initiative to remove the silt from Dhobijor Nala and Tangna Nala of the city,” said the chairperson.
