Bhubaneswar, May 29: Chess players from across borders are sweating their brains out to win an international chess title at the ongoing annual KIIT International Chess Festival here.
But, after their war on the board is over for the day, they look forward to spend time with their chess-playing friends in the state.
"We keep meeting at international events and have great affinity. Odisha has many talented players, and it's fun playing against them as well as learning the game together," said Korniyuk Mariya from Ukraine.
There are over 20 players from outside the country. The players hail from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Sweden, Australia, Phillipines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the USA. The harsh summer is proving to be a testing time for them.
"The truth is that every game gives your brain a lot of stress, and you need to rest after finishing a board. So, we only go out late in the evening to escape the heat. We do not understand a lot of English, but we enjoy with the local chess players," said Pantsulaia Levan from Georgia.
Players from Bangladesh have found the state to be a home away from home. "I came here last year as well. I enjoy this festival and the hospitality here. My Bengali helps me communicate with Odia people, and I find no difficulty getting along with my peers here. Plus, the food is just like home," said Hossain Enamul, a Grandmaster from the neighbouring country.
For Swedish boy Semcesen Daniel, the festival is something he keeps coming back to. Daniel has been taking part in the chess festival since past few years and honing his skills.
"This time, I'm aiming to get among the top five," Daniel said.
The festival will be held between May 24 and 31. The All-Odisha Chess Association, in association with the KIIT University, has hosted the event. It is being held at the KIIT International School here.
