Bhubaneswar: Police on Monday launched an online portal to smoothen traffic problems in the twin cities.

The online seva portal will provide commuters information about traffic congestions before taking a particular route.

Commissioner Y.B. Khurania said: "We will also use the website to reduce the number of accidents by taking up awareness programmes. The commuters will also get to know about alternative routes that they can use."

"We will educate commuters about traffic rules and the need to obey those. The number of accidents can be reduced if we follow traffic rules in letter and spirit."

"Those who violate rules will be penalised," he said.

The cops also flagged off 16 specially-designed motorcycles in order to catch violators. Bike-borne constables will follow the violators and seize their vehicles.

"Appropriate action will be taken, including imposition of huge fines. The constables will also quickly reach the spot in case of traffic-related problems," said a police officer.

The police also introduced cooling jackets for constables. "Anyone wearing the jacket will feel cool and be able to perform their duties effectively," said the officer.

In a related development, the police have intensified operations to track traffic violators in both cities.

"There are checks at most squares to ensure that people use helmets while riding motorcycles and wear seat belts while driving."

Fine for dumping

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the owner of a patch of land in front of DAV Public School, Pokhariput, for dumping building materials on a nearby drain.

The fine was collected as an administrative charge for dumping on drains and roads.

Civic vehicles lifted the building material immediately after the man was fined.
