Cuttack: Police have arrested two persons in connection with a gold chain snatching case at Markatnagar.

The police said both of them were criminals, wanted in connection with a robbery, which they had committed after being released on bail. Later, they tried their hands in snatching gold chains targeting women in the isolated stretches of roads by using stolen motorcycles.

The two, identified as Sk Sabir and Anil Das of Imamnagar near Sati Chaura, were sent to jail on Friday after being charged for robbery and produced in court following their arrest on Thursday.

The cops zeroed in on the duo while investigating a chain snatching case. The incident occurred on May 7 when Swarnamayee Pradhan, a resident of Sati Chaura along with her friend, was on her way to a market at Sector-6 of Markatnagar. At 10.30am when they were near Petanalah Chhak, two persons came on a motorcycle, snatched the chain from her neck and fled towards Sector-10, Swarnamayee had alleged in her complaint at Markatnagar police station after four days. The victim said she had gone to Sonepur in panic, and on her return, she reported the matter at the police station.

While investigating the case, deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said the gold chain had been recovered, along with a stolen motorcycle and mobile phone taken by them in a dacoity case.

"The two accused were involved in many thefts, burglary, robbery, dacoity and also in murder cases. Recently, after release from jail both of them along with others had committed dacoity in Markatnagar police limits," Singh said.
