Bhubaneswar, Aug. 16: The housing and urban development department has decided to set up a skill development training centre in an attempt to train workers, operators and engineers for capacity building and quality execution of water supply and sewerage works.
The move aims to create skilled workers. "We held a meeting and decided to set up a training centre of international standard. The workers will get quality training and extend their expertise at the field level later," said an official of the department.
Sources said the urban development department planned to join hands with the Japan Sewerage Works Agency for the proposed skill development centre. Japan Sewerage Works Agency is a non-profit agency working as a solution partner in the wastewater business.
"Sewerage works are a comprehensive series of operations including planning, assessment, design, construction, operation and management. Each stage requires a range of technical expertise and Japan Sewerage Works Agency has the ability to train the officials in the field of water management," said the official.
Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said capacity building of the officials was an important aspect to execute any urban projects in an expert manner. "If the officials are well trained, they will have the power to execute the job in a smooth and strong manner. The upcoming training centre will prove a boon for urban infrastructure," said Jena.
The housing and urban development department officials propose to take over the existing training facility at Trisula in Cuttack where Larsen and Toubro is presently training officials of the works department, labour employment department and industries department.
"The training facility needs quality infrastructure and additional trades with associated curricula to meet the increased skilled worker demand in the state. We are working on the proposal along with the funding requirement. Once this is done, we will go ahead with the project," said Public Health Engineering Organisation (Pheo) superintending engineer C.R. Jena.
