Bhubaneswar, Feb. 5: Passengers or others visiting the city railway station would be under vigil with East Coast Railway authorities starting installation of closed-circuit cameras today. The process would be completed by the end of March.
The drive is a part of the integrated security system that is being introduced at three railway stations in the state — Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri. The new system involves installation of baggage screening devices and an explosive-detection tools.
A railway official said the Rs 2-crore system was being introduced at Bhubaneswar railway station. The Railway Protection Force would mange the system.
He said as many as 10 high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom cameras (day and night) would be installed in and around the station area along with 20 fixed-zoom cameras. Similarly, two baggage scanners and two door frame metal detectors would be installed.
More than seven lakh railway passengers depend on the station every month. Though more than 120 trains originate from or pass through the station daily, the present security measures remain inadequate. While the single baggage scanner and a door scanner at the entry to the platform do not function regularly, the station does not have a single CCTV.
The new system would also include a vehicle surveillance system, which would capture the image of number plate and driver of the vehicle. The stations would be provided bomb basket, bomb suite and other tools for explosive detection and disposal.
