Balasore, Oct. 14: Police are considering a proposal to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all the prominent traffic junctions in the town to ease traffic management, crime control and maintain law and order.
The police said four cameras had been installed on an experimental basis at Fandi Square prior to Durga Puja to help Sahadevkhunta police station. These gadgets proved to be very helpful.
The cops said they had a plan to install such cameras at least at six more junctions.
The squares where the cameras are to be installed are - FM circle, Station Square, Police Line Square, ITI Square, Cinema Square, Gadagadia Square and the bus terminal at Sahadevkhunta.
At each square, the installation cost of four cameras and optical fibre will be around Rs 1 lakh. The police, which will utilise a part of the funds allotted for traffic revamp, have approached the local industries to assist them in the project, said additional superintendent of police Santosh Nayak.
The control room of all the CCTV cameras would be at the traffic police station. The round-the-clock monitoring would be made from the traffic police station, near Police Line Square.
"To meet the expenditure, some local industries have been approached and they have agreed. There would be four cameras on each post. The private party that will install the cameras will be asked to maintain the equipment for five years," said Nayak.
"The Fandi Square installation has proved effective and hopefully, by next month, all the remaining squares would be covered," he said.
Another police officer said: "Besides traffic management, the cameras will be very helpful in preventing and detecting crimes."
