Bhubaneswar, April 27: Be careful while loading the petrol tank of your motorcycle at the filling station as chances of being cheated are high if you are not careful.
Consumers being supplied less petrol than its worth came to light during a surprise raid conducted jointly by the state food supplies and consumer welfare department along with the legal metrology department.
The squad raided six petrol pumps in the city following allegations of irregularities in the supply of petrol and diesel.
“We have found that two petrol pumps have not displayed their weights and measures chart on the board. We have imposed Rs 2, 000 fine on each of the petrol pumps,” said a senior official.
However, officials denied any report of adulteration of petrol in the capital but they said that such cases are being reported from other parts of the state.
Stephen Mohanty, a private sector employee, said: “The government should be more harsh to the petrol pump owners. Most of the petrol pumps are giving less petrol. If we pay them Rs 50 to fill up, they will give petrol for Rs 49.83, but do not return the amount left.”
Food supplies and consumer welfare secretary, R.K. Sharma said: “We have also received the reports. We will certainly take steps in this regard.”
Similarly, LPG gas connection holders should be careful while taking cylinders.
The squad has found that the LPG gas cylinder for domestic use, which should carry at least 14.2 kg, carries much less.
Similarly, in the commercial gas category, the cylinder that should have at least 19kg of gas is found to carry less. Gas for domestic purpose is sold at Rs 376 and the commercial gas cylinder is being sold at Rs 1,165.
Smita Das, a consumer said: “We are helpless. The gas distributors are charging at least Rs 20 more for delivering the gas cylinders. We don’t know whom to approach.”
“More awareness drives will be launched to educate the people. They should not pay any extra money to get a gas cylinder,” said Sharma.
The city has around 2.25lakh gas connections but another one lakh connection is still required officials said. Besides the city, surprise raids were conducted across the state and 561 irregularities were detected.
“We have seized 35,653 litre of kerosene and 650 cylinders. The government has collected Rs 1.77 lakh as fine,” Sharma said.
Raids were also conducted on the LPG gas wholesalers in other districts.
