
Bhubaneswar, Oct. 7: The students' union poll fever continues to grip the state despite cancellation of polls in major universities and colleges.
Irate students today staged protests on a few campuses demanding cancellation of some candidacy and elections in those colleges, where it had been cancelled.
Students of the Gopalpur College at Bahanagar block in Balasore burnt tyres, demanding elections. One platoon of police had to be deployed on the spot to control the students.
Polls in the MPC Junior College in Baripada have been cancelled sine die in the wake of students' violence on the campus. The college authorities cancelled the election after the students had gone on a rampage, damaging furniture in protest against the cancellation of candidatures of some aspirants.
The situation continued to remain volatile at Jeypores' Vikram Dev autonomous college, Dhenkanal College and the Baripada MPC Colleges. The Vedvyas College and the Hrushikesh Ray College also reported minor incidents of violence. Adequate police were deployed at various colleges to prevent any flare up.
However, the Utkal University Maharshi College and Rama Devi Women's University in the city remained largely peaceful.
In another development, the candidates, whose nominations have been cleared, are putting in their best foot to woo the students.
"We have been going for door-to-door campaigning and using the social media to reach out to the maximum number of students. There are at least six to seven posts a day, and we are posting campaign pictures and also the updates about changes we would like to see on the campus. Inspiring and motivational quotes are also being posted from time to time," said Ronali Roy a candidate from the Rama Devi Women's University.
Aspirants in some colleges were seen going all out to attract voters by offering them small gift items, flowers and chocolates. Also, students are bracing up for the "What I stand for" meeting scheduled on October 13.
