Ponzi cuffs

Balasore: Police arrested the head of a sham deposit collection firm on charge of duping investors of crores of rupees and produced him in court on Wednesday. The 45-year-old accused, Jagdish Mishra, a Baliapal resident, had multiple activities, including real estate, and duped the investors by promising them high returns.

Man drowns

Sambalpur: A 30-year-old man drowned at Sadak ghat of Mahanadi river in Khetrajpur police limits on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Bholamadhab Hota of Pardesipara. Hota drowned while he was taking a bath at the ghat after cremating a body. Local residents present there at the time retrieved the body from the river. “The body has been sent for autopsy. A case has been registered in this connection,” said police.

Jumbo attack

Rourkela: A four-year- old girl was trampled to death by an elephant at Timana village within Sundargarh district’s Badagaon forest range on Tuesday. The victim’s mother was also injured in the elephant attack. According to sources, the elephant came out of nowhere, destroyed the house and trampled the mother-daughter duo.

Crop loss

Bhawanipatna: A small breach on the right canal of the Indravati irrigation project on Wednesday submerged  200 acres of farm land. The embankment breached at Ranipatna in Kalahandi district’s Jaypatna block. Irrigation officials reached the spot and examined the breach.

Student held

Cuttack: Police on Wednesday arrested Ravenshaw University Students’ Union president Bobby Khan on charges of rape and blackmailing. Khan is accused of sexually harassing a girl for the past three years. The victim filed a complaint against him at the Barabati police station. A case has been registered in his name.

Arrested

Berhamur: Police on Wednesday arrested three more accused in the Polsara eve-teasing and murder case. The three accused are Narayan Sahu, Manoj Nahak and Subash Nahak.
