Cuttack: The court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate here allowed the police to take custody of the gangster brothers — Sushant and Sushil Dhal Samant — for seven more days for more probe into the alleged Om Prakash Swain murder case. The court, however, did not allow a plea to hand cuff the gangster duo during their visit to the court on Tuesday.
Suicide
Rourkela: A 40-year-old man, who poured kerosene and set himself on fire before entering the Uditnagar police station, died in the early hours of Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi Hospital. The deceased, identified as Prabhakar Nayak alias Jhabua of Basanti Colony, took the extreme step to put pressure on police to get him the money that he had apparently given a woman, a cop said. The incident took place around 8.30pm yesterday in presence of cops.
Security drill
Bhubaneswar: A joint security drill will be conducted off the Odisha coast on February 24. The exercise, to be conducted by navy, coast guard, CISF and the marine wing of the state police, will help assessing the preparedness to counter possible terror attacks through the sea route.
Bribe cuffs
Bhubaneswar: A police sub-inspector working with the grievance cell was arrested on Tuesday while taking a bribe of Rs 2,000. Sisir Kumar Das, 46, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe for facilitating the meeting of a complainant with the police commissioner. Vigilance sleuths said Das was earlier trapped in 2004 while taking a bribe of Rs 2,500 during his posting at Kuliana police station in Mayurbhanj district.
CRPF centre
Sambalpur: The director general of CRPF, Prakash Mishra, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a CRPF group centre at Basantpur, on the outskirts of Sambalpur city. Around Rs 400 crore will be spent for the establishment of the centre. The fund will be released in phases and work will be undertaken accordingly. Labourers
Paradip: At least 17 labourers were injured on Tuesday in the prohibited cargo operational area of Paradip port when a mini-lorry carrying them to a construction site hit a rail wagon.
The lorry was making its way to the port for coal transportation. The injured persons, who were contractual labourers engaged by a private farm, are undergoing treatment at the Port Trust Hospital.
