Sarpanch locked 

Balasore: Enraged villagers of Saraswatipur on Monday locked the sarpanch and a village level worker for manipulation, which saw them left out of the latest list of ration card beneficiaries. 

2 kids dead

Sambalpur: Two children were killed after an earthen wall collapsed on them at Tablakata under the Kuchinda police station limits of the district. The deceased have been identified as Tarani Pruseth, 5, and Ranjan Sahu, 7.

Hirakud dam

Bhubaneswar: Hirakud dam authorities opened 10 sluice gates to release excess water from the reservoir following heavy rain in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi on Sunday. 

The Rengali dam authorities also released excess water.

Flood toll

Bhubaneswar: About 4.79 lakh people in 597 villages under 15 blocks and one urban local body in five districts have been hit by the recent flood, which has killed five persons.

Trampled

Bhubaneswar: A 60-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant on Sunday night in Nilgiri. The deceased has been identified as Fatu Soren. He encountered the pachyderm while returning home from the weekly market.

Protest threat

Bhubaneswar: The Block Grant Secondary School Teachers’ and Employees’ Association has threatened to close down all block grant high schools in Odisha on August 18 if the state government fails to fulfil its demands.
