Rail line doubling

Bhubaneswar: Doubling of rail lines from the city to Puri has been completed with the last phase of the Sakhigopal-Puri section being done. Besides, the doubling of 32-km Begunia-Khurda section has been ready and it will be thrown open to traffic soon.

CM directive

Bhubaneswar: After reviewing the performance of the revenue and disaster mitigation department, chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday instructed the concerned departments to issue important documents such as caste certificates and residence certificates to newborn babies along with their birth certificates.

Raze drive

Bhubaneswar: An eviction drive was launched from Jharpada special jail to NH-203 to remove unauthorised constructions, to facilitate expansion of the existing road. Around 25 structures and 30 boundary walls along with 10 extended verandas and 40 unauthorised hoardings were demolished.

Arrest

Bhubaneswar: Police on Tuesday arrested three persons, including a woman, in connection with the assault on police personnel at Haldipadia slum in Lakshmisagar police limits on Monday.

Three nabbed

Bhubaneswar: Police on Tuesday arrested Pratap Parmanik, Moti Prasad Soren and Ramesh Chinara for theft, and seized gold ornaments weighing around 40grams and silver ornaments weighing around 1kg.

Spot visit cancelled 

Cuttack: The high-level standing committee of the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Tuesday cancelled its on-spot visit to take stock of the Japan-assisted integrated sanitation (JICA) project, ahead of the chief minister's visit to the city on Wednesday.

Three dead

Rourkela: Jayaram Minz, his son Rajesh, and Chaiti Minz died due to suffocation inside a deep well at a brick kiln here. The trio had entered the well to clean it, as they would use its water. Jayaram and Chaiti were working in the brick kiln, owned by one Adesh Sharma, near Laing in Kansbahal police limits.

Woman hurt

Paradip: A 25-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted in a government-run hospital in Aul for delivery had a close shave. The ceiling came crashing down and fell on her bed at around noontime on Tuesday. The 
victim sustained minor bruises on her head as the rotating blades of the fan hit her.

Fire mishap

Bhubaneswar: Five persons were critically injured after a gas cylinder burst at Athgarh in Cuttack. The injured are being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Jailed

Bhubaneswar: The Balasore district judge on Monday awarded life  imprisonment to a 60-year-old for hacking a woman to death at a village in the district two years ago. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the accused, Parikhita Dalei. Parikhita, a native of Gobindapur village, had killed Santana Dalei, 62, of the same village following an altercation over a minor issue on June 28, 2010.

Celebration

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Sahitya Academy is going to celebrate the birth centenary of Binode Kanungo, compiler of Jnan Mandal, a famous Odia encyclopedia. The celebration will commence from Wednesday at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. 

Sports boost

Cuttack: The Odisha Olympic Association has decided to add 17 new districts of the state along with affiliating two state sports associations.
