Bhubaneswar: The government on Tuesday decided to acquire private land for redevelopment of drainage channels to avoid artificial flood during rains. A meeting, chaired by chief secretary G.C. Pati, also decided that if land were to be taken from any individual, an equal amount of land would be compensated in the city or outskirts.
Monkey
Paradip:At least seven persons have been injured in a monkey attack in Jagatsinghpur town in the past 48 hours. People from ward No. 6 of the municipality are not venturing out for the fear of simian attack. Local people said they were helpless as neither the administration nor the forest department was coming to their rescue., 22. The incident took place on September 30. The victim’s family lodged a case last evening.
Infant dead
Bhubaneswar: Body of a newborn male child was found near Bhimpur in the city on Tuesday. Police recovered the abandoned body and conducted a post-mortem at the Capital Hospital. This is the third such incident in the past 15 days.
Accused flees
Sambalpur: An accused, who was arrested by Hirakud police on Monday night, fled from the Hirakud police station on Tuesday. The accused, Upendra Mukhi,was arrested for looting cash from a person.
Fire mishap
Bhubaneswar: Five persons were critically injured after a gas cylinder burst at Athgarh in Cuttack. The injured are being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Jailed
Bhubaneswar: The Balasore district judge on Monday awarded life imprisonment to a 60-year-old for hacking a woman to death at a village in the district two years ago. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the accused, Parikhita Dalei. Parikhita, a native of Gobindapur village, had killed Santana Dalei, 62, of the same village following an altercation over a minor issue on June 28, 2010.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Sahitya Academy is going to celebrate the birth centenary of Binode Kanungo, compiler of Jnan Mandal, a famous Odia encyclopedia. The celebration will commence from Wednesday at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.
Sports boost
Cuttack: The Odisha Olympic Association has decided to add 17 new districts of the state along with affiliating two state sports associations.
Task force
Bhubaneswar: The task force on mining formed by the state government on Tuesday decided to constitute a sub-committee to examine the quantum of minerals to be transported. The sub-committee will submit its report to the government within 15 to 20 days.
Corrigendum
In April 7 edition of The Telegraph (page 4) — the headline “BJD pleads Congress to oppose land bill” should read “Congress pleads BJD to oppose land bill”. The error is regretted.
Removal quashed
Cuttack: Orissa High Court on Tuesday quashed the state government notification removing Justice (retired) A.K. Samantaray from the tenure post of president of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The state government had issued the notification on May 9, 2012, removing him from the post two months prior to the completion of his tenure of five years or 67 years age (which ever is earlier). Samantaray had challenged it on the ground that his removal from the post without any inquiry was illegal. Justice Biswanath Ray ruled that the action of the government was “contrary to law”.

Bhubaneswar: Australian High Commissioner Patrick Suckling on Tuesday made a courtesy call on chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat. They are said to have discussed about the greater need for co-operation in the field of agriculture, mining and education.
