Privilege notice

Bhubaneswar: Aul Congress MLA Devendra Sharma on Friday moved a privilege notice against parliamentary affairs minister Bikram Keshari Arukh for allegedly misleading the Assembly over the police firing in Rajkanika area on March 8. While Arukh told the Assembly that police had resorted to blank firing and no one was injured in the firing, Sharma said six persons had suffered from bullet injuries.

Bribe cuffs

Bhubaneswar: The CBI on Friday arrested Pankaj Lenka, an enforcement officer of the Employment Provident Fund, who demanded Rs 15,000 from a person to issue Provident Fund certificate to him.

Drugs seized

Bhubaneswar: The excise department on Friday arrested one Krushna Chandra Nayak of Khurda district for allegedly selling brown sugar and ganja in the Khandagiri area. The excise officials seized 20 grams of brown sugar and 2kg of Ganja. The officials are interrogating Nayak to ascertain the source of the drugs.  

Wife torture

Bhubaneswar: Baijanath Sabar, 25, was arrested for allegedly setting his pregnant wife on fire in a drunken condition at Jagannathpur village in Kalahandi on Friday. Local residents noticed the fire and called an ambulance. Police said that Sabar had a fight with his wife, Basanti, 21, and set her on fire.
