Peaceful strike

Bhubaneswar: The Kandhamal strike called by the Kui Samaj Samanwaya Samiti, a tribal outfit, passed off peacefully on Friday. There were no untoward incidents from any parts of the district. The samiti has put forward a 34-point charter of demands that include setting up of a medical college in Kandhamal and stern action against people getting government jobs by producing fake caste certificates.  

Lancers coach

Bhubaneswar: Mark Hager, the head coach of the Black Sticks Women team from New Zealand, has been appointed as the new coach of the Kalinga Lancers, the Odisha team for the fourth edition of the Hockey India League 2016. The fourth season of the league is scheduled to commence from January 18 and will conclude on February 21.

Murder

Balasore: A 24-year-old youth from Barunsingh in Khantapara has been accused of beating his 58-year-old father to death. Police suspect Jogendra had killed his father, Sudam Parida, over a property dispute.  The accused is absconding.

Selection trial

Bhubaneswar: The two-day selection trial for the 53rd National Roller Skating Championship began at the Cambridge School in Cuttack on Friday. The open trial is being organised for the first time by the Roller Skating Association of Odisha under the supervision of observers and selectors of the Roller Skating Federation of India.
