Teacher arrested
Berhampur: A teacher of a government high school at Purushottampur in Ganjam was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly beating up a Class-IX student. The boy, who suffered a fracture in his hand, is undergoing treatment at a hospital. “Bhaskara Patra, the accused teacher, was arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by Debaraj Behera, the father of the student on Tuesday,” said inspector in-charge of Purushottampur police station B.K. Sahu. Ganjam district education officer Sanatan Panda suspended the teacher.

Sambalpur: A 38-year-old woman, Alaka Naik, died after a truck hit the two-wheeler she was riding near Batamangala temple in Ainthapali police station limits on Wednesday.
Eye gouged
Jeypore: An eye of a minor tribal boy from Koraput district was allegedly gouged out while he was engaged in digging a borewell. The incident happened in Hyderabad, where he was working as a labourer. “I have sent the district labour officer and labour inspector to the boy’s village on Wednesday for immediate investigation and a thorough probe after which the details of the incident would be known,” said Sunil Kumar Sahu, the deputy labour commissioner of Jeypore.
