Woman kills self
Kendrapara: A 22-year-old woman committed suicide on Friday by consuming pesticide after allegedly being harassed for dowry by her in-laws at Hariabanka village in Mahakalpada police station limits. Police have taken the deceased’s spouse and mother-in-law into custody for abetting to the suicide. Earlier, the victim’s father had lodged an FIR with the police, alleging that her husband and in-laws were constantly harassing her mentally and physically on dowry-related grounds, police said.
Posters seized
Sambalpur: Police on Friday seized five posters, allegedly circulated by Maoists. The posters were seized from Char Chhak area near Maleikhaman village in Jhargram panchayat in Sohela police station limit of Bargarh district. Bargarh superintendent of police Ashis Singh said: "The posters were written in Odia script. We are verifying whether the posters were indeed circulated by Maoists."
Two dead
Keonjhar: A woman and her 11-month-old boy were charred to death in Palasghati village under Ghatagaon police station limits in Keonjhar district on Thursday night. The deceased have been identified as Labangalata Nayak, 30, and her son Saurabha. Sources said the bed in which they were sleeping and the mosquito net caught fire from a lamp and they were charred to death.
New post for Marik
Bhubaneswar: Former director general of police Sanjeev Marik was on Friday appointed as the chairman of the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation. He was removed from the DGP's post in the first week of November and was asked to go on leave.
National award
Bhubaneswar: Ram Kishor Sharma, the rehabilitation officer of Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped, Odisha, has been selected by the central government for the national award as the best placement officer. He will receive the award on December 31 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will receive the award for his contribution in the field of skill development and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
Bus strike
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Private Bus Owners' Association has decided to go on strike from December 1. The association called the strike on Friday after the second round of talks between it and the state transport department on tax hike did not yield any result.
Mammal census
Kendrapara: The census of mammals at Bhitarkanika National Park has begun. The number of olive ridley turtles engaged in annual mass nesting at Gahirmatha beach is also being conducted.
