Bhubaneswar, May 18: The Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) will sponsor two Raahgiri events in the city.

The response came after the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation had requested the OMC managing director to sponsor three events.

"I request you to kindly sponsor an amount of Rs 5 lakh for Raahgiri, which would enable OMC to be the title sponsor of events for three Sundays," read the official letter sent by deputy commissioner Srimanta Mishra.

Mishra told The Telegraph that the OMC had agreed to sponsor two Raahgiri events instead of the requested three.

"We had asked the OMC to sponsor three events, but they have agreed to sponsor two," said the deputy commissioner.

The BMC, in collaboration with Bhubaneswar Development Authority, police and the state tourism department, has been organising Raahgiri here since January 17.

"Raahgiri has become a household name for promoting non-motorised transport and we want to continue organising it," said a civic body official.

"Different voluntary and non-government organisations have been showing interest to participate in various events every Sunday. However, for the promotion and other aspects of the event, we need money for which we invite sponsors," said the official.

Raahgirihas become popular among all-age groups, including children, youth and elders.
