Bhubaneswar, Dec. 15: The tales surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ were retold on stage at a cultural event hosted at Rabindra Mandap here to usher in the Christmas festivities.

The Bhubaneswar Christian Community, an association of over 74 churches and para-church organisations, hosted the event.

For 12-year-old Craig Fernandes, the story is quite significant. "I remember that Jesus was born into poverty like me. My family is poor, but the Christmas story gives me hope," said Craig, who lives in a slum near Chandrasekharpur.

The performance also touched upon all the important events of Christ's life, including the miracles he performed during his lifetime and his crucifixion.

Governor S.C. Jamir, along with his wife Alemla Jamir, also attended the event.

"Christmas is the celebration of God's successful plan of rescuing mankind from the cesspool of misery and sin. Christ loves us all and we hope that true spirit of Christmas will bring peace and prosperity to all of Odisha," said Chitta Ranjan Nayak, secretary of the community. The evening also saw groups from some of the member churches presenting their acts.

Members of New Creation Church, WME Church and New Life Fellowship Church presented a group dance that carried the message of brotherhood and peace.

The Union Church presented various Christmas songs that were accompanied by actions. Others presented dance performances to songs signifying the true meaning of the festival. A number of solo acts were also presented. A number of performances were staged in Odia.

"The event is very colourful and touching. The Christmas spirit is in the air already," said Ashra Nayak, a bank employee.

The community members indulged in sweet treats with Christmas being synonymous with cakes and lip-smacking goodies.

A number of festivities are being held across the city ahead of the festival. A couple of the popular hotels already had their plum cake-mixing ceremonies a fortnight ago, while confectioneries are busy churning out yummy cakes and goodies.
