Bhubaneswar: An Indian Overseas Bank officer, who was arrested last weekend from Bangalore in a 2010 loan fraud case, was produced at a city court here on Monday.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the state crime branch arrested Bimbadhar Swain on Saturday for a fraud that took place when he was manager at the bank's Rasulgarh branch.

He had allegedly conspired with Ashutosh Mishra, who had taken a loan of Rs 1.08 crore by furnishing fake documents. Swain is now deputy general manager at the bank's regional office in Bangalore. Mishra was arrested in July 2014.

Police said Swain had been arrested under sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code.

Mishra had taken a loan of Rs 1 crore from the Rasulgarh branch of the nationalised bank in two phases by falsely claiming himself to be the proprietor of a sweet and snack-manufacturing company. He had also mortgaged a plot in Chandrasekharpur in the name of one Krushna Prasad Mishra as security for the loan. The police said Mishra had received the loan money in two phases in October 2010 and July 2011.

Besides, Mishra had also taken a car loan of Rs 8 lakh from the same branch in November 2010 with the help of forged documents.

The fraud came to light after Mishra defaulted in paying interest for his loans. Later, a case was registered with the EOW in May 2014 on the basis of a complaint by the bank's chief regional manager. Investigation had revealed that Mishra was not the proprietor of the sweet and snack manufacturing company as he had claimed.

"Mishra had forged the letter pad of the sweet and snack manufacturing company to get the loan. Besides, Mishra had got a person stole the identity of Krushna Prasad Mishra, a man who had died in 1994, to become his guarantor for," said a police official. The cops have also seized the SUV that he had bought with the car loan.
