Rourkela: A three-month-old girl died on Wednesday, prompting allegations from her family members that she had been administered wrong doses of injection at an anganwadi centre in the town.

The child's family members have lodged a complaint with Uditnagar police.

The daughter of Sarjoo Sahoo, a Malgodown resident of the town, was administered vaccine under the regular vaccination programme at the anganwadi centre by a heath worker on Wednesday around 11am. However, the baby's health condition started deteriorating in the evening. She had got fever.

"The baby was rushed to Rourkela Government Hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead," said deputy superintendent of police Pradyumna Mishra.

Shortly after this, the aggrieved family members lodged a complaint at Uditnagar police station. Sahoo is a daily wage earner.

Mishra said: "The baby was administered Rotapenta injection under the vaccination programme in the anganwadi centre at Malgodown."

However, her parents alleged that she was given a wrong dose, which was meant for a 15-month-old kid and not for a three-month-old baby. "This allegation was levelled against the heath worker, and the investigation is going on at this moment," said Mishra. "No arrest has yet been made, because the investigation is at a very early stage. Let the post-mortem report come, so that we can get to know the doctor's version about the possible cause of death. Based on it, we can make arrest."

In the wake of a mild tension over the incident, sub-divisional medical officer Pushpamita Mishra, who oversees the vaccination programmes here, said: "We have to look into all aspects of the allegation. We cannot just cannot act unilaterally and reach a conclusion."

The sub-divisional medical officer said the investigation was yet to begin.

"How can the investigation begin unless we get a formal complaint. No one has yet come to us to lodge it. We are waiting for the post-mortem report and other circumstantial evidences and then only we can reach some conclusions," she said.

She also confirmed that the baby was given the Rotapenta injection as part of the vaccination programme.

A leading paediatrician of Rourkela, who did not want to be quoted, said: "The Rotapenta vaccine can be administered to a three-month-old baby."

Another doctor said prescribed vaccination did not cause deaths. "We need to look into the other causes," he said.
