Bhubaneswar, Nov. 28: The post-mortem report of the three bodies found on Utkal University campus on Wednesday has revealed that the trio had committed suicide, police said today.

The bodies of Brajabandhu Acharya, 58, a laboratory assistant with the statistics department, his wife Prativa, 55, and son Bisawjit, 27, were found hanging from the roof of a staff quarters garage on the varsity campus.

After receiving the autopsy report today, the police said the family took the drastic step because of acute mental agony following Biswajit's bankruptcy.

"Biswajit had collected more than Rs 50 lakh as advance from several people, promising to provide them four-wheelers and two-wheelers at a discount. However, he failed to deliver on his promise, because he had blown up the money. He had disappeared from the city for a few months to avoid the customers he had taken money from," said a police official.

Further investigations revealed that the family had sought time to return the money, but they knew they would not be able to arrange for it. Brajabandhu had earlier sold a flat in the city for their daughter's marriage.

"The family had been under severe stress for the past few months, which might have forced them to take the drastic step. We suspect that all of them committed suicide," said a police official.

Train fire probe

A National Investigating Agency (NIA) team arrived in Bhubaneswar today to investigate the fire incident in three express trains at Puri railway station on November 12. Sources said the NIA was likely to interrogate the accused, Ramachandran Subash, 27, tomorrow to ascertain his possible terror links.

Today, the Puri sub-divisional judicial magistrate granted the Government Railway Police a three-day remand of Subash. The accused is likely to undergo a polygraph test at the state forensic laboratory during this period.

The state government had requested the Union home ministry for an NIA probe into the train fire incident two days ago.

Subash, who hails from Tamil Nadu, was arrested on November 13. The police had seized a matchbox, blades and a knife from him.

Fire had broken out in two bogies of the New Delhi-Puri Nandankanan Express, while two coaches of the Tirupati-Puri Express were gutted. Subsequently, the fire had spread to a general compartment of the Puri-Howrah Express stationed at platform No. 6.
