Bhubaneswar, April 29: The government railway police today arrested a person in connection with stealing of ATM cards from train passengers from Khurda Road railway station.

The police had released the man’s sketch last week for identification. The accused was identified as Maheswar Mohanty of Kumunda area in Cuttack. The police seized a motorcycle and several ATM cards from him.

According to government railway police officers, the man used to steal the ATM cards from train passengers and draw money by using those.

Sources in government railway police said Maheswar had stolen the purse of one Sanjay Patra, a resident of Sahid Nagar area, who was going to Chennai by Coromandel Express on February 2.

While Sanjay was boarding the train, Maheswar stole his purse. Maheswar then went straight to the ATM counter of State Bank of India located in front of the station and withdrew Rs 23,000.

After two hours he withdrew Rs 15,000 from another ATM counter of the same bank in Bapuji Nagar area.

Similarly, he had stolen the purse of Binod Bihari Das who was going to Koraput by Hirakhand Express on February 9.

Maheswar withdrew Rs 40,000 from the ATM counter at Priyadarshini market in CRP Square by using Binod’s card.

“Both victims had lodged complaints in our police station and we found out how the accused had withdrawn the money by using their ATM cards.

“We even had released his sketch after seeing his picture from CCTV cameras installed at the ATM counters,” said S.R. Kar, inspector-in-charge of government railway police station.

Sources said people had informed the police about this man after his sketch was released. The police will produce him in court tomorrow.
