Balasore, Dec. 27: Balasore police today arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his 35-year-old wife for dowry and other domestic disputes. The accused had threatened to shoot her down.
The police slapped several sections under the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Arms Act for possessing a loaded country-made revolver. They have also seized three spare live cartridges and a loaded revolver from him.
The accused, Baburam Mahanta of Dhangheri village in the Raibania police station limits, had allegedly been torturing Janjali and asking her to bring dowry. His wife had alleged that Baburam had indulged in ex-marital relationships. Last light when she confronted him, he had beaten her up. She has suffered deep injuries on her head. He also brandished a revolver and threatened to fire at her, said the police.
The victim managed to give him a slip and went to the neighbour’s house for help. The neighbours took her to the nearby community health centre at Hatigarh and informed her parents. On Friday, she lodged a police complaint.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that had he procured the firearm from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. The villagers suspected that he was associated with criminal elements in the neighbouring areas.
“We are checking his antecedents and investigating all aspects of the case,” said Birendra Kumar Rout, the investigating police officer.
