Berhampur, March 10: Police today seized two firearms, ammunition and important documents from one of the houses of arrested former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena in Patapura Gambhariguda.

The police suspect Jena of having links with arrested Cuttack-based gangster siblings - Sushil, 36, and Sushant Dhal Samant, 39.

The police claimed that Jena's network spreads beyond the state. So far, it has seized 30 accounts from several banks in the state and outside.

Berhampur police chief Sarthak Sarangi today claimed that Jena has confessed to his links with tender fixing, land deals, illegal arm supply, liquor and sand trade. His business could be worth crores, he said.

"We are trying to expose these links," Sarangi said.

Describing Jena as a "dreaded mafia", Sarangi said that two teams had been constituted to look into his financial and criminal dealings.

The police claimed that Jena had told them of having bought firearms from Munger in Bihar and Calcutta.

"We suspect that Ramesh had links with the Dhal Samant brothers because without them he could not have succeeded in the arms trade," Sarangi said.

In 2014, the Berhampur Sadar police had arrested two persons with two pistols and 60 rounds of ammunition from Jena's vehicle. The arms were being transported to Sanakhemundi in Ganjam district. The driver Anil Nayak is still absconding, he said.

The police today said that Jena was facing 43 criminal cases between 1994 and 2016. These cases include 30 in Berhampur, 12 in Ganjam and one in Kharavela Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar.

"This clearly shows that he is a dreaded criminal and there was no political pressure to arrest him," said IG of police (southern range) Amitav Thakur. The Congress has accused the police of acting at the behest of the BJD to fix its politcal opponents.

"After his arrest, two persons have come forward to lodge FIRs against him," Thakur said.
