Bhubaneswar, April 22: Popular Oriya film actress Archita Sahoo was declared as the celebrity ambassador of Unicef in Orissa on Thursday. Vowing to do her best to participate in awareness initiatives of the United Nations body for development of children, the actress announced her support to the cause of Unicef in the state.

Following the footsteps of celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and the entire Indian Cricket Team, who are the Unicef supporters at a national level, Archita will now be involved with various events that the body conducts within the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Archita said: “I have a special place in my heart for those, particularly the children, who are in need. I am fortunate to be in a situation where I can make a difference to their lives. I, therefore, welcome this association with Unicef, which will enable me to make a difference to the society and people who have given me so much.”

The actress who has proved her mettle in the film industry as well as social causes (she was the ambassador of the Global Handwashing Day and the Government of Orissa on the issue of child labour), feels there is a lot that needs to be done for the development of children in the state.

“From issues of child labour to lack of education, there are many things that need to be taken care of. Like Angelina Jolie, who despite being such an internationally renowned actress serves social causes I too wish I can perform the responsibilities of being a good human first,” said Archita.

She was given an official letter for the cause at an event in the city when she became the first official celebrity supporter for Unicef, Orissa.

Chief of Unicef Orissa, Shairose Mawji, said: “Unicef is proud to welcome Archita Sahoo as a celebrity supporter. She is an icon for the youth and enjoys tremendous recognition across the state. Her support to the cause of Unicef is certain to bring greater visibility and action on issues pertaining to the children and young people in Orissa.”

Unicef collaborates globally with renowned personalities from the field of sports, music and the performing and film arts. These celebrity supporters are chosen based on the respect and appeal they command as genuine humanitarians, said Mawji.
