Bhubaneswar, May 21: Within seven days of the introduction of mobile-based application 'Mo Saathi' by the police, more than 1,000 women have downloaded the app.

The app aims to ensure women's safety and was launched on May 15. Police said they have received around 1,800 registration forms since the introduction of the app. While they rejected hundreds of registrations since the users reside beyond their jurisdiction, it also had to reject the registration of several men who downloaded the app.

"We have received registration forms from Odia woman living outside the state. The app is only meant for women residing in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack as we can immediately send our men to assist them. The app is exclusively meant for women," said a senior police official.

In case of an emergency, the user can send an alert by pressing the power or soft button five times.

As soon as the button is pressed, the mobile phone's camera would activate automatically and capture a 30-second audiovisual recording that would be transmitted to the police control room instantly.

The police said a number of users in a bid to test the app, press the button.

"They should refrain from doing that since it wastes our time. If a user sends false alert twice, her registration would be cancelled," said Satyabrata Bhoi, the deputy commissioner of police.

The users praised the new initiative of the police.

"Two policemen visited my house to verify the details that I had submitted in the registration form. I also received the key within 24 hours after registering myself. While checking the app, I accidentally pressed the SOS button and immediately received a call from the police control room," said Palash Das, a user.

Several women, especially those travelling in night demanded the app to be available in phones other than android. "The application is currently restricted for users of android phones. But it would be better if the app can also be extended to i-phones and windows phones," said Sagarika Das, a working woman.
