An idol maker puts finishing touches to a Saraswati idol at Unit-I in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. The student community across the state will pay obeisance to the goddess of knowledge, music and creative arts on January 22. Saraswati Puja is a time that calls for a break from regular study schedules as the students take part in the festivities with a riot of colours and zest. Households and educational institutions across Odisha organise the puja on various scales. The day, also known as Basant Panchami, marks the procurement of wood, the first step towards rath yatra festival. Though carpenters will commence building the chariots only after seeking Aagyan mala, the garland of permission from lord Jagannath on Akshaya Tritiya, they start collecting the logs that are kept on the road at Ratha Khala near the temple from Basant Panchami itself.
