Bhubaneswar, Nov. 22: The accountant-general today convened a meeting with various stakeholders as part of a performance audit of the police of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Several stakeholders, including representatives of residential welfare associations and urban practitioners, expressed their views on the performance of the police.

Sources said most participants discussed several aspects of policing, including behavioural aspect and issue related to registration of FIRs, parking lots, community policing and registration of senior citizens.

“I raised the problem related to zebra crossings and community policing. In the city, you can see that the zebra crossings are not being maintained properly. Even busy intersections are there without zebra crossing,” said Piyush Ranjan Rout, an urban management practitioner, who attended the interface.

The accountant-general has framed certain performance indicators in consultation with the National Crime Records Bureau, the Bureau of Police Research and Development, and other police commissionerates, including those of Mumbai, Delhi and Kerala.

Sources said that today’s interface was aimed at formulating some other performance indicators by interaction with stakeholders.

“Though the police have been instructing to register senior citizens of the city, so far only hundreds of them have registered themselves. This should also be included in the performance audit,” said a senior citizen who attended the interface.

Though the accountant general regularly conducts financial audits of various government departments regarding their finances, the officials said that the performance audit of the police was be done for the first time. Earlier, the accountant-general had conducted a performance audit on the modernisation of the state police.
