Cuttack, Jan. 14: With tension still prevailing on the Ravenshaw University campus after yesterday’s group clash, a two-member delegation from Afghanistan embassy today met officials and students in a bid to res tore peace. One Afghan student was injured in the clash.
Sources said a delegation from the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan led by Mohammad Azim Sahak held discussions with police, university officials and students trying to assess the situation.
The safety of foreigners studying in the university has become a matter of concern for the authorities following Thursday’s clash. The clash followed an altercation over a protest being staged by the local students against alleged irregularities in one of the hostels of the university.
Sources said the Afghan delegation held separate discussions with the university authorities and the officials of commissionerate police including Cuttack DCP Amitendra Nath Sinha. They also met students occupying various hostels on the university campus and those sta ying in private accomm odations in Jobra, College Square and Mahanadi Vihar areas.
A feeling of insecurity seems to have gripped the Afghan students making them reluctant to appear for the third semester examination scheduled for tomorrow.
“Although we are prepared, many of our friends are thinking of skipping the examination due to security reasons,” said Bismillaha, a student.
Around 80 foreigners, a majority of them from Afghanistan, are studying at the university. Yesterday’s incident was the second instance of foreign students being attacked in the university.
“Afghan embassy officials held discussions with us and we have assured them that adequate security would be provided to students. We have also requested the deputy commissioner of police to intensify patrolling in the areas where the foreign students are staying,” said Smarapriya Mishra, registrar of the university.
Journalists covering yesterday’s clash, who were also attacked by students, staged a demonstration today at the Malgodown police station demanding immediate arrest of students’ union leader Harishankar Rout and his supporters.
“We are investigating the matter and action would definitely be taken. Embassy officials expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for the security of Afghan students,” said Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Amitendra Nath Sinha.
