Bhubaneswar, Oct. 29: Normality was restored at Utkal University today after the protesting employees got an assurance from the police that action would be taken against the students.
The latter had allegedly attacked the employees during the Laxmi Puja celebrations on the campus.
The varsity authorities have agreed to fulfil some of the demands of both the employees and the students. Classes will begin from tomorrow and employees have agreed to resume work.
Tension had erupted in the campus after employees attacked some students over the selection of guest for the Puja. Later, more students joined and there was a clash between the two groups. 10 people from both sides were injured.
In the morning the vice- chancellor Binayak Rath had talked to representatives of employees and students. The varsity authority had agreed to construct boundary walls in residential areas and provide round the clock security.
The vice-chancellor had earlier warned the employees of action in case they did not join their work.
Later, the police talked to the employees and assured them of action against students.
After getting the assurance the employees called off their protest and informed the authorities to join the work from tomorrow.
Representative of students Tanmay Swain said, “It is good that the employees are ready to join their work.
“But if the authorities fail to fulfil our demands for compensation of damaged vehicles and treatment of hospitalised students along with taking actions against the employees who rent their official accommodation in the campus, we will revolt again.”
“If no action is taken against the students after the assurance from the police and the authorities do not keep their words, we will stop work again,” said president of Utkal University officers’ association Prafulla Mishra.
