Cuttack, Oct. 11: The municipal corporation is struggling to dispose of solid waste generated in the city.
There has been stiff opposition to disposal of solid waster by local residents near the existing dumping yard at Chakradharpur in Barang block, some 15km south of Cuttack.
For over four days, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has been unable to dump the solid waste at Chakradharpur due to the ongoing agitation against the poor civic amenities. The residents of Chakradharpur stopped the process of dumping solid waste generated from Cuttack to make the district administration respond to their demands.
They want the authorities to improve civic amenities, including roads and uninterrupted water supply.
Due to this, the bulk of the garbage is now being stacked at the sole weighing and transfer point at Sati Choura, which is not in a position to store any more solid waste generated from the city.
"It's been two days since the garbage from our locality has not be cleared even though the sweepers are dumping the waste near the bins that are filled up," said Kartik Sahu, a resident of Kanika Chhak.
The ongoing stalemate in the solid waste management process is likely to create problems in maintaining overall sanitation measures ahead of the festive season.
"Since no step has been taken by the authorities to develop basic facilities, especially roads, we have stopped the CMC from dumping solid waste at Chakradharpur," said Kanhu Dalai, a local resident.
