Bhubaneswar, Aug. 25: Two persons died in two separate accidents in the city this evening.
While a nine-year-old schoolboy was swept away in a drain, a 35-year-old man was killed in a lightning strike.
Eyewitnesses said Pupun Biswal, 9, a Class IV student, was returning to his home in Nayapalli when the accident took place.
"Since it had rained heavily, the drain was overflowing and the boy failed to notice it. He stepped into the drain by mistake and was swept away immediately," said an eyewitness.
Fire service personnel tried to rescue him but failed. His body was fished out of a drain around 500 meters away.
In another incident, Prakash Das, 35, who stayed at a slum near Khandagiri, died after lightning struck him.
He was rushed to Capital Hospital where he was declared dead.
Several parts of the city remained waterlogged due to 13mm rainfall this evening. The heavy downpour also led to traffic congestion at Kharavela Nagar.
