800kg ganja seized in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: Police seized 800kg ganja and arrested six persons in three separate incidents police here on Sunday evening.

Acting on a tip-off, the police waylaid a truck on the Kalimela-Podia Road in Podia police limits on Sunday evening and recovered around 350kg ganja.

The cops arrested three persons from Maharashtra for smuggling the contraband to Nagpur and Mumbai.

"The arrested persons will be produced in court. We are probing into their involvement in other smuggling cases in the district," said Malkangiri superintendent of police Jagmohan Meena.

The arrested are Sarique Ahmed, Tasif Khan and Md Mohasin.

In the second incident, the cops seized 315kg ganja from a truck and arrested two persons near Nuaguda village in Orkel police limits.

"We seized the contraband during our regular blocking of vehicles. The arrested duo are Bedesi Behera and Ranjit Sahu, both from Angul, who were smuggling the ganga to Boinda," Meena said.

The police also arrested Md Rahmat, a resident of East Singbhum in Jharkhand, who was smuggling 143kg ganja in an SUV.

"We checked the vehicle near Mantriput Chhak in Chitrakonda police limits and it was found that the ganja was being illegally transported," said police.

Meena said the police have intensified its drive against ganja smuggling in the district and recovered over 2,000kg ganja in the recent months.
