Koraput: The district police administration introduced round-the-clock motorcycle patrol at Jeypore town on Monday to keep tabs on unruly bikers, snatchers and traffic violators.

"Though we have PCR vans functioning in the town, those often face trouble getting to the spot due to traffic and narrow lanes. Hence, the motorcycle patrolling was introduced to overcome this problem," said Koraput police superintendent Kanwar Vishal Singh.

"The bikes will help us navigate narrow lanes and bylanes and the congested localities. This will also decrease our response time," he said.

In the initial phase, the police have modified three motorcycles, each carrying two policemen, and the bikes has been linked to the police control room. The bikes will be fitted with GPS and siren.

"Based on the success of the motorcycle patrol, more bikes could be added to the existing fleet," he said.

The police said anyone in the town facing any type of law and order or traffic problems can contact by dialling its special number - 9438916930.

Also, the police have taken a slew of measures to streamline the traffic system in the town. Apart from marking special parking zones, the student-traffic volunteer's scheme will be introduced in the town shortly.

"Already, we have launched an awareness drive to sensitise the people on various traffic rules through distributing leaflets and organising street plays. We urge all to obey the traffic rules, including wearing helmet, to avoid accidents," he said.

Moreover, the administration has decided to arrest private bus owners under Section 133 (conditional order for removal of nuisance) of the CrPC if they park their buses on the NH-26 near the government bus stand. "The road in front of the government bus depot has been converted into an undeclared bus stand, causing problems for commuters," said Jeypore sub-collector Chakravarthy Singh Rathore.
