Jajpur, July 18: A 22-year-old woman was gang raped by two men at her Charibatia village residence on Tuesday night.
Police have arrested both the accused, who were identified as Udaya Gocchayat, 48, and Susanta Kumar Sahu, 28.
Gocchayat is said to be the owner of the house in which the victim used to stay on rent. Sahu is Gocchayat’s friend.
Sources said the victim, who hailed from Balabhadrapur village in Kendrapara district, ran a tailoring shop in the nearby Chandikhole bazaar.
She had been staying at Gocchayat’s house for the last couple of months.
Late on Tuesday night, Gocchayat and his friend Sahu, who works as a mason, raped her when she was alone at home.
“Gocchayat knocked on the victim’s door late on Tuesday night and asked her to open it for some urgent work. Hearing knock and the landlord’s voice, the victim opened the door. The moment she did that, both the men barged in and bolted the door from inside. Then the duo raped her in turns,” said inspector in charge of Dharmasala police station Laxmidhar Das.
The accused had threatened her with dire consequence if she disclosed the incident to anyone, he said.
On Wednesday, the victim lodged a complaint with the local police. The police arrested Gocchayat from the house and later picked up Sahu, who was hiding in a neighbouring village.
“We have conducted medical examinations on both the victim and the accused and are waiting for the report,” said Das.
The accused were forwarded to the court today and later remanded in judicial custody after their bail applications were rejected, he said.
