Bhubaneswar, March 9: On a lazy Sunday morning when most accorded themselves a few extra hours of sleep, about 200-odd youngsters put their running shoes on for a cause.
A youth organisation called Rhythm of Nation organised a mini marathon to spread awareness about diabetes.
Titled ‘Know No Diabetes’, the marathon began from Magnetic Square and concluded at Janata Maidan. The participants covered 5km in an hour. Doctors from a private hospital accompanied the participants in case they needed medical assistance.
Glucose was provided at the pit stops making sure all the participants completed the journey.
While the three runners finishing first were awarded cash prizes, the first fifty runners received participation certificates.
After the conclusion of the marathon, Sunita Sahu, doctor, educated those present on the causes and consequences of diabetes. She also spoke on the importance of a healthy diet.
“Following a few simple rules on the right intake of food and water can reduce the risk of many ailments,” she said.
The talk took place at Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar.
The participants appreciated the initiative. “It was a great experience taking part in the marathon. We tend to ignore the importance of a proper diet and regular exercise because of our fast life. But by doing so, we invite diseases,” said Ishita Chawda, a third-year engineering student at a private college.
In the last week of February, the group, which keeps itself engaged in many public awareness activities, staged a street play titled “Man Crosses Rail” on Exhibition Ground.
On the behest of railway officials, about 10 participants of the group enacted a play about two friends who, as part of a bet with each other, agree to cross the railway track in a suicidal manner in front of an advancing train.
But things do not go as planned and one of them dies leaving the other with sheer guilt and horror. About 100 visitors witnessed the poignant play that had some power-packed dialogues.
