Shillong: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited Progressive Workers' Union on Tuesday met state labour minister M. Ampareen Lyngdoh to apprise her of the demands of more than 1,500 long-time casual workers doing work of regular nature.
The union has been agitating for their constitutionally mandated labour rights, including equal pay for equal work, PF, ESI and maternity benefits, which have been denied to them.
Ampareen deputed the labour commissioner to examine the demands in consultation with the union and a review of the situation will be done by the minister within 20 days.
In light of this, the union has decided to temporarily suspend its black flag and lunch-time agitation and wait for the outcome of this process.
