Guwahati: The Assam unit of the BJP on Saturday adopted a resolution urging those opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, to wait till publication of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), only which will make it clear what impact the bill will have on the state.
The resolution was adopted at the two-day executive meeting of the state unit of the BJP that concluded in Nalbari on Saturday evening.
A BJP source said only after publication of the NRC, the exact number of Hindu migrants from Bangladesh living in the state will be known and then only it can be analysed how the state will be affected if citizenship is granted to them.
"We cannot analyse the possible impact of the bill on the state based on emotions. We will have to do it on the basis of facts. Some individuals and organisations are making absurd claims that there are 1.90 crore Hindu migrants from Bangladesh in the state whereas the total Hindu population of Bangladesh in 1.20 crore," the source said.
The BJP urged everyone to cooperate with the NRC update process. "It will be premature to raise a hue and cry at this stage when consultation on the bill is still going on," hesaid.
The source said the NRC will make it clear what is the number of Hindu and Muslim migrants from Bangladesh and which community poses real threat to the existence of the indigenous people.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, proposes to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs and Parsis from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India without any valid document on or before December 31, 2014.
On Friday, senior cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke in support of the bill at the executive meeting and asked those opposed to it to find out which community threatened to reduce the Assamese to a minority.
"People of Assam will have to decide whether they want Badruddin Ajmal or Sarbananda Sonowal as the chief minister of Assam," Sarma had said.
