Assam police unveiled their first all-woman commando unit, Virangana, at a function organised at the auditorium of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday evening.

The Viranganas —who were trained in martial arts and use of lethal and non-lethal weapons — displayed their skills at the function, drawing thunderous applause from the audience that included chief minister Tarun Gogoi, his wife Dolly Gogoi and Assam director-general of police J.N. Choudhury. The women commandos will be deployed in the city from Saturday to rein in eve-teasers and troublemakers to give a boost to women’s safety. The director-general of police said 100 Viranganas had undergone a three-month training at the Police Training College at Dergaon. Of them, 40 had received specialised commando training in Chennai. They will be deployed as decoys in crime-prone areas of the city to trap criminals who target women.

‘The feisty young women, who are on a par with their male counterparts when it comes to unarmed combat, will be able to fight, strike and immobilise anyone who dares to break the law,’ a police officer said.

The chief minister also inaugurated the Assam Police Idol competition, organised by the Assam Police Wives’ Welfare Association, at the same venue by lighting a lamp.
