Guwahati, May 27: Unseeded Nagaland boy Vitsizolie Nagi and Andhra Pradesh girl S. Mubashira Anjum caused upsets on the first day of the AITA Championship Series Tennis under-12 and under-16 Tournament that got under way at the All-Assam Tennis Association courts here today.
Nagi shocked fourth seed Sikkim lad Siddharth Basnet 9-5 in a boys’ under-16 first round encounter while Anjum upset eighth seed Natasha Baruah of Assam 9-1 in under-16 girls’ singles first round.
Paras Dahiya and Anuj Malik of Uttar Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh boy Mingki Talom also sailed into the second round in the boys’ under-16 singles. Dahiya got the better of Assam opponent Satyam Bora 9-4, Malik cruised past Harjeet Singh of Assam 9-2 and Talom crushed Shakib Ahmed of Assam 9-2 in the first round.
In the under-16 girls’ courts, it was a cakewalk for Assam girls Abha M. Baruah, Annie Thousen, Sanhita Vasava, Denbagana Borkotoky, Janashree Saikia, Lenien Jamir, Heemadri Kashyap and Shreshtha Baruah in the first round.
